    Bo-Kaap is a beautiful, quaint, and colourful suburb that nestles at the foot of Signal Hill in the City Bowl of Cape Town. Its history however is steeped in Slavery and it is also known as the ‘ Birthplace of Islam’ in the Cape. Enslaved people, artisans and political exiles were brought here from Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Malaysia amongst other places.

    We will meet at 71 Wale Street for an introduction to the area, providing an overview of the history of Cape Town and Bo-Kaap.

    We then stop at Cape Town’s famed spice shop Atlas, where you will smell the heady aromas of spices used in everyday Cape Malay cooking. These are the same spices used by slaves as an expression of freedom in their ‘masters’ kitchens.

All five of us thought the guide was amazing. Deeply knowledgeable, a good speaker, and a concerned listener. We were a mixture of natives, ex-pats, and foreigners and we all learned a lot.

What an interesting place, and the guide Ilyas, used his charm and experience as a long term resident to really bring to life the community. Hence on the short 1 hour walk around Bo Kaap we met and saw residents. Totally recommend Ilyas and the Bo Kaap tour

We had the most amazing time with Rafiq and his cousin. We learned a lot about Bo-Kaap, we had a chance to walk in whole district and feel safe. Rafiq is an incredible guide : he teached us a lot about the story, about him and we also had a chance to talk about other very interesting topics. I definitely recommend to book this tour !
