It's been a little over a year since we were in Bosnia, and I recently realized that I never left a review for this company. Scrolling through recent reviews, it appears that the people we interacted with are still there, so it seemed appropriate to still write a review. I had to choose a date to submit the review, but we were actually there in January 2022.
We had a wonderful experience with this company. I contacted them late at night in order to set up a tour for the next morning. I was honestly surprised when Ema responded to my request within an hour of me sending it (I think it was around 11:00pm when she responded). She had us set up for a tour departing at 9am the next day.
Almir was our tour guide and he was absolutely wonderful. We did the Siege Tour. Almir is a survivor of the war who was able to offer a lot of personal insight to everything. It was winter, and low tourist season, so my husband and I were the only ones on the tour. Almir really made us feel like friends. He even insisted on buying us coffee when my husband made an offhand comment about how he hadn't had his coffee yet that morning. We were taken to the War Tunnel, the Bobsled Track and the Jewish Cemetery. Almir never rushed us. Instead he encouraged us to take our time to really absorb everything that we were seeing, and we really felt like we were given enough time to explore and appreciate each location. We also drove past quite a few other sites of historical significance and he offered to stop at any of them that we wanted to see up close. His stories of his personal experiences fighting in the war, and losing his brother in the war were sobering and really helped us to understand what had happened during the war. There's something truly special and moving about being able to interact with someone who took part in the history that you're learning about. He was willing to answer any questions that we had. So thank you to Almir for being so open about his experiences. I can't imagine that it's easy to relive those experiences every time a tourist wants to learn about them. My husband and I both have a lot of respect for him, and we're grateful for the education he provided us with.
Our tour actually ran past its allotted time because of the fact that Almir allowed us to take our time at each site. He was always aware of the time though, so if we were in a rush, or needed to be somewhere, he would have taken us back to our hotel on time if we had asked him to.
Our trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina really taught me that there is a LOT to unpack and understand about the death of Yugoslavia. It's a lot of information that I probably wouldn't have fully understood if we had chosen to visit all of these places without the help of a tour guide. I would highly, highly, recommend Funky Tours for your tour needs in Sarajevo. I would love to go back in the near future to take another one of their tours.
