This was a great afternoon. We were staying at a resort and it was a quick cab into Puerto Morelos for the tour. We were travelling with another family. The kids and the guys went to the nearby zoo while us girls did the food tour. It was easy to share a cab since it was on the way. We really enjoyed the tour Chris had organized for us. It included a ton of different types of food and we got more than our money’s worth. Chris walked us through the various regional cuisines of Mexico. The tour was well organized and I definitely felt like I got to see a more authentic side of Mexico. If you are interest to learn about and try Mexican food you should get off the resort and take this tour. It was a safe, fun afternoon guided by a friendly conversationalist. I recommend it to anyone who wants to really visit Mexico.

This is my fourth visit to Puerto Morelos and I always stayed on the port side because that’s where the beach, restaurants, shops and plaza are. Basically that’s where the tourists go. But I always wondered about the Colonia, which is across the highway bisecting PM and is where the locals live and shop because it’s more affordable. I also started hearing stories about wonderful, authentic and reasonably priced restaurants in the Colonia. My interest was piqued but I didn’t know how to find them. Enter Rivera Maya Food Tours on TripAdvisor! I immediately signed up for the dinner tour and am I happy that I did. Cris, the owner, was my personal guide as I was the only one who signed up for this particular one. Score!! The tour is themed around foods from the different states in Mexico with their unique tastes. He talked about the history and location of each state and how that influenced the way their food was prepared. We went to several restaurants that I would’ve never found and Cris told the story of how the owners ended up in PM bringing their unique cuisine with them. It was a really special experience and stands apart from any other tour that this world traveler has taken. It felt like I was with a friend who was showing me his favorite eating spots. A very memorable experience.

First off I was the only one on the tour so Chris and I took off on our own and it was great! We had a real chance to talk about food. Not only on the tour but how Mexican food is viewed in the USA. Each place we visited had a culinary history that Chris explained using a map of Mexico. He talked about how each place was a family owned business or a new chef just starting out. Then we tried a dish from each place. Fabuloso! I highly recommend this tour.
