Sian Ka-an daily adventure tour

We have been on many tours over the course of our travel adventures, and I can tell you emphatically from start to finish, this tour was outstanding. Sian Ka’an, the biosphere is an amazing destination. There are basically two distinctly different ways to visit this protected area. We opted for the land version of the tour although it’s my understanding there is access from the ocean. Be prepared to do some effortless floating (the tidal pull does all the work) along the warm fresh-water canals cut into the mangrove wilds, a little hiking, and exploration of Mayan ruins dating back to 300 BC. A bonus was the excellent lunch provided midway through the trip. Add to this safe transportation both from your hotel and back and it’s clear we were in safe, capable hands. Saving the best part for last, I need to single out Carlos our guide. Having spent a few years as a child living with this grandfather in the jungle, his knowledge of everything touched by this tour was outstanding. Carlos is one of those rare individuals whose passion for his work is in display from start to finish. Our extended family of 9 felt truly blessed to have Carlos leading us through what will always be a very memorable experience.

I've been wanting to visit the Sian Ka'an for a long time and Contoy Excursions (and our guide Carlos) went above and beyond my long-held expectations of a trip like this. If you are a nature-lover, a visit to the Biosphere is a must! Boat and float down ancient canals through mangroves and see an abundance of birds, fish and wildlife. Then, visit the Mayan archeological site of Muyil. The local guides from Chunyaxché and our Contoy guide Carlos had so much pride in sharing the beauty and diversity of this landscape with us. We learned so much about the history and ecology of the region. Unexpected perks included an amazing homemade meal of Chicken Pibil and Sikil Pak (with fresh tortillas) - the best meal we had on our vacation. And photos Carlos took throughout the day, including some beautiful bird photos, were shared with us. While we considered doing this on our own, I'm actually really glad we didn't. We had 9 adults total. The meal, photos, provided transportation and knowledge/history shared by Carlos made the reservation with Contoy Excursions all worth it. 10/10 would recommend. 20% was paid upon booking through pay pal. We paid the rest with cash right away in person. Ensure that you communicate the right day and pickup time the day before and have their phone number on hand to call if needed. If visiting the Biosphere- you will need to bring biodegradable sunscreen and bug spray.
