Pacaya, one Guatemala’s youngest volcanoes, offers hikers a unique glance into the geologic center of the earth on this 8-hour small-group tour. A relatively easy climb of 1.5 hours brings you to the fertile shelf just below the cinder cone called “la Meseta.” From here you get an awesome view of recent lava flows. You will explore these lava fields, and as the smoking crater looms above, the environment quickly changes to resemble that of an extraterrestrial setting. Enjoy a freshly prepared lunch while gazing at the views before you make your way back down. Tour includes private transport, all entry fees, all guide fees, a fresh lunch, and a 1st aid trained bilingual guide.

FANTASTIC hike. Our two guides were absolutely perfect. I am an astronomer so have spent time at altitude before and know that it can affect you differently every time. I struggled a little bit with this hike so I needed to take a few breathers. Our main guide told me to not worry, we could take as long as I needed. There was a (very fit!) 8 year old girl in our group and the other guide ran (yes, ran!) ahead with her so she could enjoy the hike while the old lady (me) lagged a bit behind. I also loved that the guides stopped along the way to show us some interesting flora and fauna. I do not think that I am exaggerating when I say the burrito we had at the summit was among the best meals I had in all of Guatemala - and the roasted marshmallow was a fun treat. I also enjoyed meeting the dogs "Clifford" (who WAS big and red) and "Fiona" at the place we stopped for lunch.

This tour was great, and our tour guide Esmé was amazing! She was full of fun facts and very knowledgeable about Antigua, Guatemalan history, and the volcanoes. We took about an hour and a half long shuttle to the base of the volcano, then it was another hour and a half long hike up to the “top” (you’re not going to look down a crater anywhere and see actual lava). You can also ride a horse up for 150 quetzals (and back down for another 150 quetzals), which one person in our party did for part of the way up. He did end up getting ahead of us for much of the hike since the horses are led by the horse’s owner, but the hike itself isn’t too terrible—it’s a pretty steady incline on a dirt path with some nice views. But the highlight is really when you hit the dried lava, which you can walk along, make s’mores in one of the steam-producing craters, and even buy pizza from a guy who set up shop next to a larger crater (not an official part of the tour). The pizza’s 50 USD, but is one of the highlights of our trip (also safe to eat in our experience for any non-locals). The tour also provides a nice lunch with chicken, beans, guacamole, etc. too. We made it back to Antigua around 3 pm, so had plenty of time in the afternoon to hang around the city.
