Medina of Marrakesh, Marrakech, Morocco Marrakech is a city located in central Morocco, inland, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. It is nicknamed the “red city” or the “ocher city” in reference to the red color of a large part of its buildings and houses. The city was founded in 1071 by Youssef ben Tachfine, at the head of the Berber Empire of the Almoravids. In the past, Morocco was known in the East as Marrakech (still relevant in Iran); the name Morocco comes from the deformation of the Portuguese pronunciation of Marrakech: Marrocos. Marrakech has 928,850 inhabitants according to the 2014 census, spread over an area of 230 km2. The population density reaches 350 inhabitants per hectare in the Medina.

This place should have a warning label before you enter as a foreigner…
Our biggest mistake was to stay all of our days in the riads of Medina.
Coming back home from a supposing relaxing vacation, had troubles in sleeping and anxiety.
We stayed our first 2 nights in one side of Medina, it was ok.. the 2 last nights of our stay we had to change riad and we moved to the other side of the Medina..
this was terrifying, this side was 10times worst than the first one, people saw us with the suitcases and we couldn’t walk to the riad because they people following us one after the other. Everyone wanted to ask us where we were going and where we were from. I started running forward and my husband was calling me from behind to wait for him, but I was so fade up and scared and I couldn’t.
We reached the riad running, and as soon as we entered I felt that I was safe.
Then we encountered the best of all.. me as a European and my husband Arab nationality, the riad didn’t accept our booking as we didn’t have with us our marriage certificate.. they had to cancel the booking because of that..
we had to go back through all of this terror, to the car and to try to find another accommodation!!
we had to encounter all these people that they have been trying to misguide us and to fool us by saying don’t go there this road is close..or to ask money for tours.
It was terrible.. I almost had a panic attack
Another sad of it is that anything you want to buy you have to pay it 10 times more than what a local would have paid for the same thing.
The fact we are foreigners doesn’t mean that all of us are rich.
We spend a lot of money on this 5 days trip as we would have spend in any other European city.
Unfortunately in the case of Morocco, me as a woman and as European, I didn’t feel a second safe and relaxed..and the amount of money that we spend wasn’t worth the trouble at all..
We are so disappointed of the overall of this trip as we have heard so nice things about Morocco before we travel.
The thing is that we realized that it’s not only Medina like this, it’s a common habit for the locals to ask for money for anything, from just helping you to park your car to the simplest thing as to give you a direction.
The saddest of all and the scariest was our experience with the police.. which I don’t want to mention here.
I wish everything was different but as long as people still keep on bribing for everything nothing will ever change in this country.
Advice for anyone that wants to visit Morocco.
1)TRAVEL PACKAGES ONLY, WITH TOUR GUIDES
2) STAY ON A DESCENT AREA OF MEDINA
3) you can find cheaper and really beautiful staff in Essaouira or smaller cities. Don’t buy anything in Medina of Marrakech because it’s a big hustle
