Saadian Tombs, Marrakech, Morocco Saadian Sultan Ahmed Al Mansour Ed Dahbi spared no expense on his tomb, importing Italian Carrara marble and gilding honeycomb muqarnas (decorative plasterwork) with pure gold to make the Chamber of 12 Pillars a suitably glorious mausoleum. Al Mansour died in splendour in 1603 30 minutes
Koutoubia Mosque, Marrakech, Morocco The Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakech, Morocco. The mosque is also known by several other names, such as Jami ‘al-Kutubiyah, the Kotoubia mosque, the Kutubiya mosque, the Kutubiyyin mosque and the booksellers’ mosque. It is located in the southwest medina district of Marrakech. The mosque is decorated with curved windows, a ceramic strip, pointed merlons and decorative arches; it has a large square with gardens, and is lit at night. The 773-meter (253-foot) minaret includes an arrow and orbs. It was completed during the reign of the Berber Almohad Caliph Yaqub al-Mansour (1184-1199), and inspired other buildings such as the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat.

As a solo traveller I wanted to get an “unseen” tour of Marrakesh that gave me more insight into the city than a big tour company. I was picked up from my hotel and taken to the city walls to meet my guide. We started at Koutoubia Mosque and learn about the Moroccan dynasties, then a short ride to Bahia Palace to view the history of the palace. From there we walked the Souks and I was guided to meet artisan tradespeople (such as quality genuine leather goods albeit I am sure there was a commission here). After the souks we went to the Le Jardin Secret for a tour and learn of the impressive engineering of the water systems, and then a short ride to Jardin Majorelle where I said farewell to my guide to explore the venue by myself. The rest of the day I spent exploring the souks and Djemma el Fna square to enjoy the evening entertainment after dusk. As I had the same driver all day I could leave purchase in the car for security, agreeing a time for pick up back to my hotel. A jam packed day that worked out to be around 10-11 hours in the go, but an immersive experience of Marrakech, and being a solo traveller I felt safe knowing Soufian was only a Whats App message away
