Experience Chattanooga’s newest attraction, The National Medal of Honor Heritage Center. Our permanent exhibits take our visitors from the actions that prompted the First Medals during the Civil War to the War on Terror conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Heritage Center offers an immersive experience that puts our visitors in the boots of Medal of Honor recipients and brings their heroic stories to life. Imagine yourself in the church where Dr. Mary Walker treated wounded soldiers, or inside a trench manning a machine gun during WWI or fighting in the forest with Charles Coolidge as he single-handedly took on a German Pazer tank.
Your experience begins in our orientation theater, where you will see a short introductory video exploring the history of the Medal of Honor. When the doors to the theater open, you will be transported to the Civil War era and learn about the Andrew’s Raiders and the Great Locomotive Chase.

National Medal of Honor Heritage Center, Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States Located in the heart of downtown Chattanooga, the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center is dedicated to connecting people with the meaning and history of the Medal of Honor. The Heritage Center serves as an engaging storyteller and shares the real-life experiences of Medal of Honor recipients on their infamous day when they demonstrated extraordinary heroism under the most difficult circumstances. Each of these amazing, inspiring and, all too often, heart-breaking stories define the meaning of valor and the virtue of putting service over self. Every recipient has a narrative that is relevant to what we do – whether it be on a battlefield, in the classroom or board room and in everyday life. The National Heritage Center takes care of over 6,000 objects that tell the story of Medal of Honor recipients and fellow veterans from the Civil War forward. These objects are tangible reminders of the sacrifice of our men and women in arms.

This was a girls weekend and many of us are veterans, so we wanted to see the museum. Extremely well done and it was nice to hear the stories of a lot of the local Medal of Honor recipients and the history behind the medal itself. So glad that this important history of our nation is being captured. All young people, especially students should see this fine museum and hear the stories that help shape our country.

Spring Break with my 75 year old Vietnam Veteran husband trip to Chattanooga. I bought tickets in advance. Nice location with convenient parking. The information and exhibits were put together well. Very informed volunteer who was actually a veteran. Not the best day to go, there was a 3rd grade field trip there. My husband and myself ended up feeling "not so great" about the experience. I was glad to see the good intentions of sparking kid's interest in history. However, we truly felt out of place there. The needs of the kids tour far outweighed any experience we hoped to have. We couldn't listen to exhibit recordings, no matter what setting my husband tried to put his hearing aides on. It was frustrating. I guess we came off as grumpy old people because the Director of the center said "barking orders" at the kids wasn't productive and they should be allowed to experience the exhibit however they were able to connect to it. We just thought treating the place like a trampoline park wasn't exactly fair to the rest of us. Rolling on the floor, doing cartwheels etc...sure it's nice to be free of the classroom setting. I am not so old that I don't remember being a kid, but I was also taught respect for the place I was visiting and other people who may also be there, that the trip wasn't all about "me". The Director was highly educated and experienced and made sure that we knew it. He made sure that we knew everyone was welcome there to experience the exhibits "however" worked for them. Truthfully that's not exactly fair. Our experience was overrun. Great place for kids to experience, explore and be free. The timing made it not so great for an old hard of hearing vet and his wife that ended up crying (me). I felt the entire sacrifice of real human beings was being transformed into something for entertainment purposes rather than given the respect deserved.

Excellent tour guides. Well done Museum. We loved the integration of them and now and the level of detail used to tell each story.
