Cork City Gaol Admission Ticket with GUIDEBOOK

While I didn’t use the guidebook we were provided with a map of the gaol which has a number of points listed on it. There are detailed explanations in respect of these points and made all the more interesting by figures and audio visual exhibitions and models, and they all provide a fascinating insight into the penal system there at the time the prison was open. The guides are helpful and the grounds make for a very interesting walk around once the interior has been viewed. I would highly recommend a visit, especially if you’ve an interest in criminology and the penal system. I might add this is great for families too!

This building served as a prison for about 100 years ending in the early 1920s. The guidebook takes you through the prison systematically telling tales of the former inmates, the staff, and the punishments. There is also a second floor presentation about early radio service in Ireland (housed there after it ceased being a prison). There are some interactive activities and a 20 minute film, toward the end of your self-guided tour, that is presented against the stone walls of the building. Plan accordingly if you want to take the time needed for that feature.

Our visit to Cork City Gaol was an informative and memorable experience. The self-guided tour, enhanced by QR code access, really brought the stories of the Gaol to life and allowed us to engage with its rich history at our own pace. This interactive approach made the visit both enjoyable and highly educational. I would highly recommend visiting Cork City Gaol when in Cork—it offers a unique perspective on Ireland’s past and is well worth the time.
