  • Arenal Hanging Bridges, Costa Rica
    The guided walk at the Arenal Hanging Bridges takes place in a 600-acre (243-hectares) reserve, filled with lush vegetation and a big variety of fauna. The trail is 2 miles (3 km) long, crosses 10 fixed bridges and 6 hanging bridges with lengths between 16 and 328 feet (5 to 100 meters) and up to 180 feet (55 meters) high, allowing the exploration of the different levels of the forest (undergrowth, sub-canopy and canopy) and offering the opportunity to observe a greater number of species, the design of the trail has a maximum slope of 7 degrees, there are no steps, they have protection rails, the surface material is Non-slip concrete, so you can walk without difficulty and feel safe even at heights. All these conditions make this trail suitable for the whole family.

Beautiful park. Knowledgeable tour guides. Unfortunately I had difficulty & could not enjoy it as I had planned. Reason: hanging bridges (there are 6 of them in this walking circuits). They gave me both vertigo & imbalance in walking the trail. Not the fault of the tour guides, who patiently monitored my balance & fatigue levels as soon as they noticed my issue. Nevertheless, it would be good if they had notified me & had checked for potential vertigo past experiences. Hugo was very supportive. He is a knowledgeable naturalist, explains everything clearly (his English is very good). David was also a good guide.

Jason’s love for nature was infectious! He went out of his way to help us get a view of a mama sloth and her baby! We were not even in the hanging bridges park yet, but he pulled over just to show us what we were hoping to see most. He even took my phone and captured video and pictures through his scope.There’s no way we could have spotted any of these creatures without his guidance. He was wonderful with our daughters, and did an incredible job of engaging and teaching them about Costa Rica’s wildlife. The entire experience was unforgettable. I initially booked this for the hanging bridges only - and those were amazing - but we got so much more. We got to see sloths, lizards, birds, and an olingo! I highly recommend Jacamar for this experience - ask for Jason!

We enjoyed our tour through Mistico Park with Jason as our guide and Gabriel as our driver. Jason was very knowledgeable and gave us a lot of information about the flora and fauna of the area. We appreciated that the group was small and there was only one other couple with us. Mistico is beautiful and there are many times when the light level drops substantially since the rainforest is so thick at times. It’s always a magical experience being in a forest of this type. We saw howler and spider monkeys, as well as several bird species and a couple of eyelash vipers. The hanging bridges are very high and may bother anyone who is afraid of heights, plus the bridges can bounce and sway quite a bit. Despite the thickness of the rainforest the trail itself is very easy - it’s either paved or has concrete blocks to walk on. The only negative of the tour isn’t related to the tour itself. It’s the fact that Mistico is very busy and there are numerous other tour groups passing through. At one point there was a long line of about 30 people waiting to cross one of the hanging bridges. The situation improved as the afternoon wore on and the number of people thinned out substantially. My understanding is that afternoons are the least busy times for the park, so may be preferable over morning.
