Lake Arenal, La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica Lake Arenal sits at the base of the Arenal Volcano in the northern highlands of Costa Rica. It is the country’s largest landlocked body of water, with a surface that covers nearly 33 square miles (85 square km) and a depth that reaches some 200 feet (60 m).
In 1979, Lake Arenal was enlarged to three times its original size with the construction of a hydroelectric dam. The towns of Arenal and Tondadora, which were originally sited on the spot where the lake now rests, were relocated to the northeastern side of the lake. We were hesitant to book because of $ but it was worth every penny. Ana in the booking department was extra helpful in getting us booked in last minute. Julio, our tour guide, was hilarious, informative and really fun to spend the day with. We had to follow the tour bus in our car (couldn't leave it parked all day) and the bus driver Coco was really helpful in making sure we didn't get lost or left behind. Lunch was delicious and it was so fun to enjoy traditional coffee and a shot of booze after our meal. Ending our long day in the hot springs was the cherry on top. Book this tour - you won't be disappointed.
