    The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is one of the best sites on the continent for bird watching. In addition to an the abundance of birds, Caño Negro is also home to many exciting animals, such as sloth, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats, and a variety of flora native to the wetlands. Our tour to this beautiful region leaves from La Fortuna and travels approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to Los Chiles, a rustic village just three kilometers from the Nicaraguan border. Then we begin our boat ride to the wetlands. On the way up, you will see many bird and animal species. Around noon we will stop along the river for a typical Costa Rican lunch before heading back to Los Chiles to take the bus back to La Fortuna.

The guide/driver didn’t know how to get to the destination - we got lost so it took us 3 hours to get there. The river safari was really cool. We saw plenty of wildlife but I wouldn’t say he was an expert on the wildlife either The promised cultural meal experience at the end didn’t eventuate

What a special experience! After a few days of high thrill adventures this was a welcome tour. Our family of 5 (including 3 boys ages 7, 17 and 18) enjoyed seeing all of the amazing animals. Our guide was outstanding- friendly, engaging and knowledgeable! From the moment we were picked up from our hotel in Arenal we were on an adventure. It took about 1hr 20 from Arenal and we arrived at a local family's home where we were treated with homemade coffee and sweet tortilla. Then we boarded a small quiet boat for our own completely private tour of the river! We saw everything from crocodiles, long nose bats, howler monkeys, whiteface monkeys, sloths, and all kinds of birds! The best was when a monkey knocked a Jesus christ lizard out of the tree and it ran across the water right in front of us! When we finished the tour we had lunch at the family's home which was delicious! It was the most authentic moment we had in Costa Rica. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting.

Relaxing River ride and we saw so much! We saw howler monkeys and capuchin monkeys, caimans, many different types of birds, Lizards, iguanas…. Our tour guide Nelson was so informative and knowledgeable. He and our boat driver were able to spot the most obscure animals and took the time to make sure we were able to get good pictures.
