Group lesson - Minimum 4 people to form a group - Cost $40 per person - 90 minutes instruction time. - Board and rash-guard included for lesson duration. - Minimum age 12 years - Best for first-time surfers learning in a group environment Semi-Private lesson - Minimum 2 people - Maximum 3 people - Cost $55 per person - 90 minutes instruction time. - Board and rash-guard included for lesson duration. - Best for families with children under 12 years old, who are not permitted to participate in a regular group lesson for safety reasons, couples and small groups of friends who prefer more personalized attention. Private lesson - One-on-one instruction - Cost $120 - 90 minutes instruction time. - Board and rash-guard included for lesson duration. - Best for intermediate surfers that would like to bring their surfing to the next level or individuals who want or need personalized instruction.

Next door (to the west) of Playa Grande School. 700 meters from the beach, Guanacaste Province, Santa Cruz, Costa Rica

Pick up from hotel/vacation rental within Playa Grande is included.
If you require pick up outside of Playa Grande, please contact us and we will be happy to arrange round trip transfer for you at an additional charge.

  • Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller
  • Service animals allowed
  • Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness
  • Times are dictated by the tides. Always reach out to Frijoles Locos to check best time for lesson on your preferred day!
  • A minimum of 4 people required for group lessons.
  • 1 surf instructor can teach up to 4 students.
  • 2 surf instructors can teach up to 8 students.
  • 3 surf instructors can teach up to 12 students.
  • Heights/weights of participants is helpful to choose the right equipment.
  • Children under 12 are not permitted to participate in group lesson due to safety reasons.
  • Minimum age is 3 years and there is no maximum age ;)
  • Same pricing applies to all travelers
  • Subject to favorable weather conditions. If canceled due to poor weather (thunder & lightning), you will be given the option of an alternative date or full refund.
  • Cancellation policy: All cancellations within 24 hours of scheduled activity will incur a full penalty fee
You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.
  • For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.
  • If you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded.
  • Any changes made less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time will not be accepted.
  • Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.

Our family of four beginner surfers (parents and teens) just returned from Playa Grande where we had three super fun lessons with Jost. He is an excellent teacher who explained the fundamentals really well. We all felt very safe and learned a lot! We much preferred being out with an instructor instead of trying to figure it out on our own. I also really appreciated the good communication during the booking process and how organized things were once we arrived. Thank you!!

My wife and I booked a semi-private surf lesson with a specific instructor. She had taken lessons from him last year and really liked him. She ended up having to drop out so I got a 90 minute private lesson. It was a disappointing experience, particularly compared to the experience I saw others having with a different instructor. --Students with the other instructors were given rash guards. Our instructor forgot to bring any for us. --The waves were very big the day of our lesson. I watched the other instructor help their students get the boards out each time through the rough surf. My instructor left it all to me, which meant I quickly became exhausted just getting the board out to where we were starting each time. When he was holding the board, if a big wave came he would just let go so that he could duck under it, leaving me to deal with the board and the wave. --I had taken a surf lesson several years ago and was told to stand with my left foot forward (I am right-footed). This instructor insisted I should have my right foot forward even when I shared my prior experience. I struggled for the first half of the lesson before switching on my own (and doing much better).

Andrew was warm, friendly, professional and knowledgeable. We had been surfing once before. He made the experience so fun.
