The drive to the lake takes 20 minutes or so and we saw a peccary and coati along the way. Once we got there, Miguel, our tour guide, was great and helped my adult daughter and I into a double kayak. He and our driver carried the kayaks down to the lake for us and then he got in his single kayak and we started off for the end of the lake nearest the volcano. It was approximately 5 km away. I am not an experienced kayaker so it took us some time to get the hang of paddling in sync but Miguel was patient with us and was so friendly! He showed us birds along the way like the needle-nosed ducks and egrets. We even saw a scarlet macaw up close! It was soooo beautiful! By the time we made it back to the van, the wind was starting to pick up and it was the perfect time to get off the lake and share some pineapple, papaya, and bananas in a little picnic! I think the fruit in Costa Rica tastes better than any I've had. Maybe it's the exercise. Or maybe it's because it's just so good! I highly recommend spending some time kayaking with this tour group.
