Sad but important historical site to visit. Great guide, lovely people on the island and a quick ferry ride over and back. Also enjoyed seeing inside the incredible bunker on the island and the Baobab trees lining the climb to the top of the hill where there were wonderful views.

as a child my maternal grandfather told us we were from the Mandinka tribe. . Afte completing my african ancestry.com kit it was true. . MANDINKA from Senegal. I have been to other slave ports and castles, but this one was particularly special . " I realized as i stepped into the door of no return that this is where my ancestor stepped before being forced unto a SLAVE ship headed to the Americas. . IT WAS A PROFOUND MOMENT AND REALIZATION OF THE PAST CONNECTING TO THE FUTURE AND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR US TO DISCOVERY /LEARN OUR HISTORY.

From the moment we were picked up at our hotel, we were learning about the Dakar of yesterday and today. We were met at the ferry by our guide who couldn't have been more knowledgeable about Goree Island (born and raised). He walked us around the island all day in just the right way to avoid it feeling like another tourist stop. They made it incredibly personal and even more poignant than it would typically be.
