We spent a total of 5 weeks in Costa Rica over the past year, spending nights at over a dozen locations--all of which were picked for their proximity to nature. Our two-day/one-night tour at Sirena Station was easily the most unique for us, and definitely not to be missed. A one-day trip to Sirena definitely would not have given us enough time to explore this area. Osa Great Adventures provided timely communication and fulfilled all their promises--arranging guide, transportation, park access, lodging, and meals.
We felt very fortunate to have our guide, Aldo, for the duration of our tour at Sirena Station. Aldo is a model of courtesy and consideration. He has a remarkable ability to spot many kinds of wildlife and also to network with the other guides. His spotting scope is of very high quality and was a tremendous help. The photos and videos he took and shared with us are marvelous! We will treasure these. We would definitely recommend Aldo to others.
The highlight of our visit was a pair of tapirs (a mother and youngster) on three separate occasions; on the last occasion, they trotted past us along the hiking trail in full light! Other highlights included very nice views of squirrel, spider and howler monkeys (all active groups); a family of coatis on the trail that ignored us as we walked by; a sleeping mother three-toed sloth with baby; a pair of crested owls; and over 50 other species of birds (a main interest of ours). A totally unexpected highlight was a stream of many hundreds--perhaps thousands!--of hermit crabs near the beach, carrying seas shells of many sizes and types.
It definitely helped that we read up on trip logistics and amenities at Sirena Station ahead of time to be adequately prepared. The road to Drake Bay has some very steep, heavily potholed sections, but our rental 4x4 was adequate. We learned in advance there is now a route to Drake Bay that provides adequate bridges at all stream crossings. We very much appreciate the balance that Sirena Station is trying to strike between allowing opportunities to view wildlife while keeping the human footprint as small as possible. The food at the dining hall--also the lunch finale at Marea Alta Bar & Restaurant in Drake Bay--was delicious. Showers, bath room sinks and sleeping accommodations were clean and comfortable. The boat ride to and from Corcovado and the dorms with no walls, bunk beds and mosquito nets all added to a fun adventure.
