Welcome to Kamberg — home to the Rosetta Stone of SAN/Bushman Rock Art. Meet our Anthropologist, Dr Jeremy Hollmann, who’ll help you unlock this mysterious place. Start with an introductory video on the SAN.
Dr Hollmann will guide you through the rugged terrain to Game Pass Shelter and delve deeper into the anthropology of the SAN people. Here you will have a chance to take in the mystery of Bushman Rock Art as we explore theories and beliefs that underpin the art.
Tuck into lunch at the Nottingham Road Brewery (own cost) before journeying along the Midlands Meander. Visit to the internationally acclaimed Ardmore Ceramics where you can expect an exhibition of creativity. Finish the day with an iconic stop at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site for a peek into South African notorious history and a bucketlist photograph.
Please note: on this tour you will have access to a specialist on SAN or Bushman Rock Art as well as an anthropologist who has studied this area and people of this area.

Kamberg Nature Reserve, South Africa Upon arrival at Kamberg you will meet Dr Jeremy Hollmann, our in-house anthropologist. Here you can ready yourself before we begin our hike. Watch a short video which offers some context to this mysterious place and the people who once inhabited this area. Embark on a hike (medium difficulty level) through the Kamberg Rock Art Centre within the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Mountains to Game Pass Shelter which is considered to be the Rosetta Stone of SAN or Bushman Rock Art. Dr Hollmann will help you unlock the route as you make your way. When you arrive at Game Pass Shelter it is all about the Rock Art and taking in the vistas. Gain insight into the anthropological theories governing the culture and beliefs of the Bushman as well as how they painted and why. Thereafter, you will make your way back down the mountain. 240 minutes
Nottingham Road Brewing Co., Nottingham Road, South Africa Enjoy lunch (own cost) at the Rawdons Hotel Pub. If you fancy a taste of the craft beers brewed on site, drop by at the Nottingham Road Brewing Company. Please note that the lunch location will change if we have travellers do not eat at places where alcohol is brewed. 60 minutes
Ardmore Ceramics, Lidgetton, South Africa Immerse yourself in a celebration of art at the internationally acclaimed Ardmore Ceramics. Their work is stocked at the most prestigious galleries and department stores the world over. Learn about the beautiful story behind the establishment and explore the workshop which is open on the weekdays. Fancy buying a keepsake? 45 minutes
Nelson Mandela Capture Site, Howick, South Africa This is the notorious spot where Mr Nelson Mandela, known lovingly as Madiba, was detained by the apartheid police before standing trial which culminated with his imprisonment on Robben Island. Explore the information gallery and the iconic art installation which offers a fantastic photographic opportunity. 45 minutes
Howick Falls, Howick, South Africa This your final stop before heading back to the concrete jungle: Howick Falls. The Falls are approximately 95m high and feeds into the Umgeni River. 30 minutes
