The museum displays an extensive collection spanning from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman Era. The architect of the building was selected through an international competition in 1895, which was the first of its kind, and was won by the French architect, Marcel Dourgnon. The museum was inaugurated in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II, and has become a historic landmark in downtown Cairo, and home to some of the world’s most magnificent ancient masterpieces.

Our driver and guide were professional and we had a fine time with them. The itinerary included a museum visit, shopping, and a bazaar visit. The museum tour was satisfactory, and the guide was professional. However, the subsequent visits to a papyrus shop, spice shop, and medicine/aromatherapy shop were overly sales-focused. The papyrus demonstration was informative, but the spice and medicine shops felt like high-pressure sales environments. The medicine shop vendor became hostile when no purchase was made. On the guide’s recommendation, a jewelry shop was visited, which was promoted as a quality experience but proved equally negative. As a result, the bazaar visit was skipped, and the tour was ended early, just so we could be done with the increasingly negative experience. This experience fell short of the quality expected from Viator’s third-party partners.

Went to the ‘old’ Cairo museum to see King Tut’s mask and other artifacts since they’re not on display at the GEM until November and then to the Khan al Kalili market. Very knowledgeable and funny duo in Shady (drver) and Ehab (guide). Friendly and conscientious they took care of me and went above and beyond to make sure I saw everything I wanted to. Recommended!

Had a great day with my guide Ehab and many thanks to my driver Maged who kept me safe while navigating the craziness of Cairo traffic. Both were attentive and very courteous, and I enjoyed spending the day with them. I requested a bazaar experience, so we started off by visiting a few government monitored specialty shops where I could trust the service and quality. After picking up some souvenirs, we proceeded to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. Ehab explained the history and the importance of each exhibit which enriched my understanding of the Egyptian culture. I then spent some time in the mummy exhibition where I viewed 20 mummies, including Ramses II and Thutmose III- that was very interesting. Overall, it was a very good day in Cairo and a very good day with Ehab and Maged. Thank you :)
