  • St. Anthony's Monastery (Deir Mar Antonios), Egypt
    Both Monasteries visited on this tour date back to the fourth century and they are considered of the earliest inhabited monasteries of the world. They belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church which is a member of the Oriental Orthodox Churches. Saint Anthony was the first Christian monk in history and Saint Paul was the first hermit. Both monasteries represent Christian institutions that contributed a great deal to the Christian theology and monastic life. The monasteries are located about 3-4 hours' drive from Cairo. You can also visit the cave of Saint Anthony. Lunch is included in this tour. Your tour includes private qualified Egyptologist, private modern a/c van with Wi-Fi on board, Bottled water and beverages.

This was just an amazing tour. I would encourage anyone who has an intest in early monasticism to take this trip. Medhad and Andrew were friendly, informed and they went out of their way to insure I visited all that I expected to see. We visited both the monasteries of St Paul and St Anthony. The highlight for me was sitting on a door stoop with a very holy older monk at St Anthony's. For some reason being that close to one who is so holy touched me deeply. Also touching the tomb of St Paul is something I'll never forget. I spent three more weeks in Egypt with another group but this was a standout!

The guide Mario (along with his driver Ali) was very helpful and provided good commentary on the trip from Cairo to the south Red Sea Desert and back. He skillfully arranged an insightful tour with one of the elder Fathers at both St Paul and St Anthony monasteries. And he was willing to join us on the 1157 step climb up the mountain to the cave of St Anthony, to take us into the very small cave to tell the story of St Anthony. A very enjoyable and informative visit and a very commendable guide and host.
