The city, which can be traced back to Roman times, takes its name from the freshwater springs which continue to well up in the gardens of the moated Bishop’s residence.

    Adjoining the Cathedral is Vicars’ Close, a charming cluster of houses frozen in time from the 14th century and believed to be the oldest residential street in England.

    We cross the atmospheric Marketplace to view the only mediaeval palace in Somerset, which has been home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for more than 800 years.     Matt offers both a knowledgeable introduction to the history of the region and a sociable and personal friend to welcome visitors to the South West of England. The bespoke tour combined an excellent variety of outdoors experience, historical sightseeing and fun and restful food and drink.

    Matt was a wonderful, thoughtful host on our day tour of Wells and & Glastonbury. It was a rainy day, but he was prepared with umbrellas! Knowing the rain would slightly impede our day, he added an additional sight, which we greatly appreciated. HIs knowledge of Wells and Glastonbury was impressive and we truly appreciated learning the history. Our lunch was very tasty and he introduced us to Cider, a drink we embraced and drank throughout our stay in England. I would highly recommend Matt - you'll be very happy with his tours.
