We booked the tour, and glad we did as it brought the history alive. Jason led the tour and he was very good, knowledgeable, able to answer most of the questions asked, and kept the youngsters interested. There is minimal parking so easier to park in a public carpark. There is minimal signage to it as well, and you do wonder if you are in the right place, initially!

Myself and a few friends visited on Sunday (23.04.23) for a guided tour. Our guide Jason was great, extremely knowledgeable and he shared many interesting stories of the prison’s history and answered all our questions. As Jason walked us around the site he pointed out all the spots we might want to go back to for another, longer look after the tour had finished. I’d definitely recommend booking the guided tour. After the tour we popped into town for some coffee and cake and to warm up (it was a sunny day, but was very cold inside the prison) and then went back to explore some of the areas in more detail – the prison was open until 5pm. There is so much history in this amazing building – I do hope it’s possible to protect it from development as it is a great educational facility

This was a very informative and entertaining tour. Thanks to Jeremy our guide for this. Also good to be able to go back later in the day to read some of the more detailed information on display. Warm clothing essential as not suprisingly no heating!
