I strongly recommend doing a guided tour. Me and my family did a self guided tour and occasionally overheard what the guide was saying; he was very interesting and knowledgeable.
However, it had advantages looking at the prison on our own, we could go at our own pace. We had our teenage children with us who were just happy doing their own thing. The prison was very interesting and provoked a heavy feeling in places. The staff were super friendly. I would definitely visit again.
