My friend and I had been looking forward to our self guided "prison visit" and were not disappointed. Jake on reception was very enthusiastic + helpful and explained the route around the prison. It is an amazing place to visit with much to see and so authentic. The information boards are very good and we learnt the history of the 400 year old prison as we explored this extraordinary attraction. It is well worth a visit and good value. It is tricky to find but worth the effort.

Shepton Mallet Prison Museum offers a chilling glimpse into Britain's penal history. This former correctional facility, steeped in centuries of confinement, is now a captivating museum that transports visitors back to a darker era.
As you wander through the eerie cells, chapel, and exercise yards, you'll feel the weight of the past. The museum's exhibits delve into the harsh realities of prison life, from the Victorian era to the 20th century. You'll learn about the infamous inmates, the grueling conditions, and the methods of punishment that once defined this institution.
One of the most striking aspects of the museum is the palpable atmosphere. The cold, stone walls and dim lighting create a haunting ambiance that heightens the experience. It's a place where history comes alive, and the stories of those who once resided here linger in the air.
Whether you're a history buff, a true crime enthusiast, or simply seeking a unique and unforgettable experience, Shepton Mallet Prison Museum is a must-visit. It's a place that will leave you both fascinated and disturbed, offering a powerful reminder of the human capacity for both good and evil.
