You have to include time to visit a thermal spa when you go to Budapest! It’s a brilliant experience and not something you can find in many places. The architecture is beautiful. We opted for Széchenyi as it was the closest to where we were that day. It is the largest and it was busy, but it was also a Saturday when we visited. You should probably aim to get there early as it’ll be a little quieter. It won’t be as relaxing as you imagine it to be when it’s so busy, there were people going around the circle in the middle of the one pool, splashing others, shouting and trying to put each other under water with no interference from a lifeguard. That being said, we were able to find a space away from that which was more relaxing. You can hire a private room to change in which is not much more than the full day ticket but it wasn’t available until 5pm when we went. Book in advance as much as you can in Budapest! The changing rooms are an experience as they are huge and very busy with no private cubicles etc to change in. The outdoor pools are beautiful, you could happily sit there all day with loungers available and drinks. However, keep an eye on your flip flops (compulsory to wear them) as ours were stolen. The indoor pools aren’t as nice, very busy and loud and they weren’t very clean when we were there. Bits floating in the water and a funny smell. But it wouldn’t put me off going back, I’d just stick to outside and go at a quieter time of day. It is a little expensive if you’re not wanting to stay all day, it’s a set price if you go for an hour or all day. We would have loved to spend the day there but didn’t feel we could use a whole day of a short break. And I have to say that the lady on the front desk was not very pleasant, I couldn’t hear her or understand what she was saying and she made her frustration obvious. But overall, it is a great experience and definitely something everyone should do!
