SEGESTA, according to the traditional legend, had a Trojan origin. It is located on the isolated hill called Barbaro and washed by the river Crimiso, nearby Calatafimi. The well-preserved temple and the Greek theater were built in the late 5th century BC.
ERICE, just about 2400 feet above sea level, is cool even in a hot Sicilian summer. According to Thucydides, it was a city like no other; a sacred place dedicated to the goddess of love and fecundity, Aphrodite for the Greeks and Venus for the Romans.

Our tour to Erice and the west coast was our second tour with Mimmo. In addition to his wonderful knowledge, he also has a great sense of humour. I could not ask for anything more. Wonderful experiences all round. We spent 2 days with him but wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone who wants a multi day tour of Sicily. He is also a good driver (helps in Sicily). Mimmo was absolutely spot on, just as you would hope for top dollar service and value! He was generous with his time and provided lots of factual, interesting information.

We were supposed to spend one hour at the temple and one hour at the teatro in Segesta. As it turned out, we never got to Erice until two in the afternoon after having been picked up at 9:00 in the morning. We then had lunch with our guide trying to find a restaurant that was still open at that time. In Erice we only toured around for a few minutes since it was so late. Erice had so much more to offer than Segesta and we missed most of it. I think it was poor planning and maybe we should have said something when our guide was repetitive and needed to do a dissertation on emotions.
Our guide asked us if we wanted to walk up to the teatro in Segesta....we said sure only to find out by my Apple Watch that we climbed 39 flights of stairs. Had we known it was as far as it was, we never would have agreed to walk up there.
This was very expensive for what it turned out to be.

Mimmo was the best guide we had in Italy. He knows all of Sicily. We spent 2 days with him. He knows the best and avoids a Tourist Traps. He customized to our needs. He went beyond any guide duties to assist with family heritage research. He knows where all the good food is and best pictures to take. His 2018 Mercedes Van makes it comfortable to cover long distances. Highly recommended. English was perfecto!
