    St. Peter's Square, Vatican City The square is framed by a large colonnade that extends from the basilica and then opens into a large, curved shape that surrounds the main piazza. The colonnade comprises 284 large, unfluted columns and 88 pilasters. The simplicity of the columns is intended to direct the eyes of the viewer to the front of the basilica. The space and structures of St Peter’s Basilica are an example of counter-reformation architecture. The colonnade and square were built in such a way as to welcome followers back to the church following the protestant reformation, which had begun in 1517. According to Bernini, the colonnades that extend from the basilica and surround the square are said to be “the motherly arms of the church,” which reach out to embrace the faithful and bring people back to the church.

  • Your tickets will be held by the guide for collection on the day of the tour. You will be required to present this voucher. If you have purchased a discounted option you will be asked to show a photo ID in exchange for your tickets.
  • Your guide will be waiting for you holding a signboard with your name at the Vatican Museum's main entrance in Viale Vaticano.
  • Knees & Shoulders MUST be covered for both men & women to enter! Please be advised capacity regulations and security may delay the tour departure  This could also influence the smooth running of the tour, especially on national holidays and events.
  • All visitors must pass through the monument/attraction security check please allow at least 20 minutes to clear security.

    Liv tours was excellent from check in to the end to ensure we could find transportation. Our guide MASSIMO was fantastic, his knowledge and narrative far exceeded our expectations. His care of others was evident by how he was alert and helped others along the way with health issues and questions pertaining to locations… I highly recommend this tour company and if you lucky enough to have MASSIMO as your guide you will not be disappointed! A must see while in Rome.

    This tour was excetional in all respects, mainly due to our guide Barbera who could teach a university-level course on the art and architecture yet at the same time kept our 4-year old granddaughter engaged! Truly amazing!

    DEBRA was awesome. Great storyteller, excellent knowledge of the sight and art, and excellent at organizing a group of over 20 in a speedy and efficient manor. She always had us at the front of every exhibit and would get others to clear so our group could congregate.
