Moulay Idriss, Moulay Idriss, Morocco It's not a long trip to drive first to holy Moulay Idriss, a pretty place balanced precariously on the edge of Mount Zerhon with dramatic views across the beautiful Moroccan countryside including Volubilis. This is a place of pilgrimage for Muslims, as it is believed that those who cannot afford to go on the Hajj in Mecca can visit Moulay Idriss five times during their lifetime to achieve equal status. The village itself is beautiful with lots of charming souks to visit, though only Muslims are permitted to enter the tomb of Idris I of the Idrisid dynasty. he ruled from only 788 to 791 AD but his dynasty is credited with converting Morocco to Islam and he was the great-great-great grandson of Islam's Prophet Mohammed. 120 minutes
Volubilis, Morocco Next is a short drive to the Roman ruins of Volubilis, called Ouallili meaning laurel flower in the Berber language, and here one is free to explore the well-preserved remains of the town, the Triumphal arch, baths, palaces and especially many beautiful mozaics of classical themes from Roman mythology. As one of the most important Roman sites in North Africa, Volubilis has UNESCO World Heritage Status. It is Volubilis that makes Meknes such a popular destination for tourists and is one of Morocco's 'must see' attractions. 120 minutes
Meknes, Meknes, Morocco Then it's on to the Imperial city of Meknes founded as a military camp in the 11th century but now known as "the Versaille of Morocco", due to it's lavish design, created to mimic the royal palaces of Paris and Arabia during the 17th century by the Sultan Moulay Ismail who made it his capital.
In it's heyday, Meknes was surrounded by 45 km of wall, in three defensive circles, had twenty city gates and protected over fifty palaces. Here you will see impressive crenulated battlements, gigantic city gates carved with Islamic art and containing Roman marble pillars looted from Volubilis, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail himself and the royal palace of Dal El Makhzen with it's Royal Stables, the beautiful Agdal reservoir and the nearby granaries and subterranean prison. Meknes has an old-fashioned charm and quaintness, a more relaxed atmosphere than Fes and is surrounded by stunning countryside, olive groves and vineyards. 180 minutes

We travelled as a group from Fes to the once capital of Morocco Meknes. Our group also journeyed to the ancient ruins of Volubilis and the spiritual capital Moulay Idriss. The entire trip was for a duration of a day.
The aforementioned places have merits and attractions worthy of books individually. As for the trip, it was organised by our guide Abdun Nabi Misbahi, he made sure that it was an experience to remember.
We set off at the crack of dawn, he had arranged a coach for us (twenty-two people in total). The coach was modern and of a good standard.
We travelled what took us the greater part of an hour to the outskirts of Volubilis where we stopped for panaromic views of a scenic country side. We tasted fresh pressed olive oil and ate figs. Thereafter we travelled to the ancient ruins of Volubilis. There was a small entry fee at Volubilis but we toured and spent the greater part of the morning there. There is a lot of history surrounding it.
We then travelled to the spiritual capital of Morocco, Moulay Idris Zarhoun. This is the resting place of the patron Saint of Morocco. It houses a very large mausoleum built on a hill. The surrounding village has evolved over time. The village takes the person into a different world and one can actually sense the spiritual presence. Abdun Nabi showed us the various chambers of the mausoleum, some which were publicly closed but he was able to get access much to the delight of our group. We also spent some time climbing the hills to gain a view of the entire village and the country side.
We thereafter travelled to Meknes. We had a full tour of Meknes, we were given information about the once warrior King Moulay Ismaeel and his many children (2000+). Also we viewed the Palace, the historical museum, the thousand minaret wall, the great gate, the large man made reservoir. We then ate at a famous eatery which was heavily discounted from the menu price due to Abdun Nabi knowing the owners. The food was perfect.
In the evening we returned to Fes for the hot baths at the hamaam, lovely sugared mint tea and to relax.
Highly recommended. Thank you Abdun Nabi and team for an amazing memorable time.
