Just a few minutes away from all the hustle and bustle of Sarasota is our favorite local beach, Turtle Beach. It is only a few short miles from the main Siesta Key beach to Turtle Beach and the Sarasota County trolley will drop you right there. Not only is this area such a beautiful and quiet place, it is also a great place to paddle! We start on the intercostal and paddle down a short canal to the Bay. We paddle around the mangrove islands through a mangrove tunnel or two and alongside a bird rookery. We paddle around the mangrove islands of Jim Neville Marine Preserve and then to a "secret" beach. This beach is only accessible by boat so we may have it to ourselves. Such a beautiful place for a quick swim or just stopping for a few moments to relax. You may want to stay here all day. This location is home to all kinds of wildlife including manatees, dolphins, beautiful sea and shorebirds and lots of fish.

We enjoyed going through the mangroves. We were fortunate and were able to see some dolphins and a manatee. It was difficult to hear our guide, Sam when she spoke. She typically was in front of the group. It would have been nice if she were in the middle of the tour group as we noticed another tour leader doing.

The SURFIT opertion site was easy to find and there were a number of parking spaces available. Our guide Jojuan, gave us clear instruction before and after my daughter and I entered the water on our single kayaks. He laid out the basics of paddling to the group and was attentive to anyone on the trip who was struggling or having difficulty navigating (our group had 3 tandem kayaks and 6 singles) as the natural state of the tunnels had some curves, low spots, and current. The t rip itself was fascinating and Jojuan was keen to educate our group on the importance of the mangroves as well as point out the different animal and plant life that we encountered along our journey. Jojuan was very knowledgeable and his passion for the mangroves and the Sarasota Bay area was really evident in his conversation with our group. He was also very funny and witty, throwing in many anticdotes and puns along the way which kept the air of our journey light and pleasant! We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to sit right next to a group of manatees who were feeding in the bay. Jojuan was respectful of these wild creatures and ensured that our presence didn't disrupt their activity. The trip was just under 2 hours in length and there was a good flow between paddaling and floating during the adventure. I would highly recommend this tour if you are in the Sarasota area! We were on this tour with a young child (7yo);- it was very safe, and the waters were very shallow the whole time—enjoyable experience, with plenty of opportunities to have a refreshing swim. Our guide, Sam, was super friendly and allowed our child to stay on her paddle board for extra fun.
