On this Banjul City Tour we will be visiting some of the main attractions for people who are interested in history! During this tour we will visit the Arch 22, Gambia National Museum and the Albert Market which is named after Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert.

  • Arch 22, Banjul, Gambia
    The Arch 22 is a monument located in on the Banjul-Serrekunda Highway. The monument was built to mark the military coup in 1994 through which former president Yahya Jammeh came to power. The arch is 35 meters high and is designed by a senegalese architect called Pierre Goudiaby Atepa. Goudiaby Atepa hasdesigned a lot of interesting buildings such as the BCEAO bank headquarters in Dakar and the ECOWAS building in Lomé, Togo. You also find the Arch depicted on the back of the 100 dalasi. The lift to the Arch is not always working so you might have to climb some stairs.

    The National museum of the Gambia presents historical and cultural artefacts from the colonial history of the Gambia. The museum opened in 1985 and has an archeological section and also a historical section. The exhibitions are curated by mr Hassoum Ceesay who is a well known historian. If you are interested knowing more about the history of the Gambia – this is the place to go!

  • Albert Market, Banjul, Gambia
    Albert market is a street market named after Queen Victoria´s husband Prince Albert Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The market is divided in to three sections – The wholesale/retail market, the food market and the tourist market. The market usually is open from 8am to 7pm. Dont forget to bargain!

This was a very interesting tour and a good chance to see more of Gambia. Jimmy was a great tour guide and was very helpful for the duration of my time in Gambia.

Several historical and cultural places in one trip from markets to crocodiles. Great views. Easy transfers between them. No problems. Thanks Jimmy!

Guide was one hour late. Security Guard at port called and woke him. Claimed traffic slowed him. No traffic. Car was almost unusable. Doors would not open. Vehicle banged up, in terrible condition. All gears not functioning. Dirty. Ran out of gas forcing us to walk back to ship. Asked if we wanted to go to a museum. We agreed. At the end of the tour he wanted more money for driving to the museum. Had not mentioned extra charge before. We were happy to leave our guide and get back on board our ship.
