Katchikally Crocodile Pool, Bakau, Gambia The Kachikally Crocodile Pool is one of three sacred crocodile pools in the Gambia. The crocodile is a symbol of fertility and the sacred sites are still used for rituals by women who find difficulties getting pregnant. The legend of crocodiles bringing fertility to women dates back 500 years when the Bojang family first settled in the area. It’s said that the fertility spirit rewarded their kindness by providing them with a magic pool. All they had to do was populate it with wildlife. So, they put two crocodiles in the pool. Locals believe that the original two are ancestral to the crocodiles who inhabit it today.
Kachikally crocodile pool is nestled within six acres of tropical forest and there are plenty of nature trails and footpaths to follow if you want to see more of the park. 60 minutes

Jimmy, our guide was great, good English and informative. The actual tour was so so. The Arch was interesting and we had enough time there. Two of the ship tours stopped by while we were there and they only had time for photos from street level whereas we were on the top level.
The crocodile farm was really good, we actually strolled around them and even stroked them. The river cruise was a total waste of time and the market was mediocre.

We really enjoyed this tour with Jimmy. What an adventure. Riding through the dusty streets of Banjul on December 6, 2022, we got stopped twice by the police, which may have been partly due to a presidential motorcade in progress on its way to visit the cruise ship from which we had just departed for the day. The museum at the Kachikally crocodile pool was an added bonus and we enjoyed quickly learning a lot about rituals, ceremonies, musical instruments and history in Gambia from Jimmy. Our guide at the crocodile pool was great working with the crocks and our cameras. Jimmy led us on a whirlwind walk which snaked through a large market filled with all sorts of wonderful sights, sounds, smells and plenty of things to touch as “Baby Driver” always positioned himself at the end of our group making sure we didn’t turn the wrong way or get lost when we got distracted. When we arrived in Daranka at Bareto Tenda, it was low tide for the beginning of our boat trip so we had to be carried onto the boats by local guys who also handed us cold beers for our journey though the mangroves where the vertical roots were covered with mussels. Because the tide was low, we got to walk through the squishy mud stream (the guides carried our shoes and even washed our feet!) which led to the fantastically giant elephant tree. This was a treat for not only the eyes but also for the spirit as all six of us climbed INSIDE the tree to a ceremonial space. Jimmy and “Baby Driver” took great care of us throughout the day and made our short time in The Gambia fun and safe. Be prepared for paying a considerable amount for the boat ride based on your choices (I’ve included a photo of the schedule of charges) plus all the helpers there looking for tips…ask Jimmy for guidance with that. Our group of four was an adventurous bunch of 70-year-old seniors and we all recommend this excellent tour. We did have a bit of trouble finding Jimmy at the port, but with the assistance of port security guard Mo Modou (abaraká: “thank you”) we met up with him just outside the gate but not holding up a sign with our name or Kassama Tours.
