Beautiful, wild and mysterious, Svaneti is an ancient landlocked in the Caucasus, so remote that it was never tamed by any ruler. Uniquely picturesque villages and snow-covered, 4000 m-plus peaks rising above flower-strewn alpine meadows provide a superb backdrop to the many walking trails. Svaneti’s emblem is the koshki (defensive stone tower), designed to house villagers at times of invasion and local strife (until recently Svaneti was renowned for its murderous blood feuds). Our tour guide Serj helped make this trip unforgettable. An interesting trip up to the Caucuses mountains where we stayed at a very friendly guesthouse. The scenery was spectacular especially from the chair lift ride to the top of the mountains. Serj was able to answer all our questions both about the trip and the Georgian way of life which enhanced the tour. The 4 wheel drive to Ushguli was challenging and amazing at the same time. Our driver tackled the difficult road conditions well. Serj was able to recommend some excellent places in Mestia to eat, drink and enjoy Georgian folk music. A great 4 days we will never forget.
