On a sunny day in April, seven of us were accompanied by Kostas, our skilful and attentive driver and tour guide, on a day trip from the north to the south of Crete between the towns of Rethymno and Chania. It was a fantastic experience. We visited two local producers and tasted their olive oil, wine, honey and raki. Kostas informed us about the places we saw along the way, including villages and churches. He told us some of the history of the region and the island. We took turns sitting in different parts of the vehicle and we were all thrilled by our trek on mountain tracks. The views from up high are sublime. And we got to see the vultures! At a lovely seaside restaurant on a beach on the south side of the island we shared a meal with our fellow travellers. Our hosts shared their home made cheese and yogurt. Their chickens and pigs provided our meat. There was a vegetable meal too. We can’t say enough about how good the trip was, and we don’t regret spending the reasonably substantial amount of money. One of the best things this Georgioupolis company does is encourage tourists to see beyond the main towns and the proceeds of the trip support local workers and producers. So, as well as participating in what was for us our very best tour in Crete, our tourist dollars were of genuine benefit to Cretan people.
