The first of November is known as All Saints' Day here in Guatemala. To celebrate, giant tissue paper kites are hand-made and raised in a small town close to Antigua, Guatemala. We will depart from a central meeting point in Antigua at approximately 9:30am. Upon arrival in Sumpango, we will take a guided walk through the cemetery where you will see and feel the celebratory atmosphere as loved ones join together to remember their deceased family members.  Your certified tour guide will explain the significance of the sights, sounds, and smells! Next, we will head to the festival grounds, where you can watch the giant kites being raised on display.  Join us for an explanation of the meaning behind the kites, and enjoy the views, the festival food, the music, and the culture in this significant, unique and beautiful festival. We recommend you bring sun protection as the sun is strong and the day is long! We depart around 2:30pm and will arrive back in Antigua at 4pm.

    Guests will be transported to the location of the "Festival de Barriletes Gigantes" (Giant Kite Festival). We will do a guided walk of the cemetery where families come to celebrate and remember the lives of their loved ones who have passed. Then we head up a small hill to the festival grounds, where you will see the most amazing works of art, the giant kites, raised and put on display. Your guide will explain the cultural significance of the flying of the kites on what is known as All Saints Day. You will learn about the traditions that take place on this day, enjoy the festival, watch the raising of the kites, and you can shop or try festival food if you wish!

  • The transfer takes approximatley 1 hour in each direction.

  • We have two versions of this product - 1. Guided tour (leaving 930am, returning around 4pm to Antigua, includes guide, transfers, explanation of the kite festival and cemetery, cultural traditions, etc). 2. Transfers only, leaving at 8am or 10am, and returning departure time at 2pm or 4pm.
