السيالة شرق، قسم الجمرك،، 6V7P+F5C, As Sayalah Sharq, Qesm Al Gomrok, Alexandria Governorate 5321431, Egypte : The Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria is considered one of the most important defensive strongholds in Egypt and along the Mediterranean coast. In the 15th century A.D., it was essential to Alexandria's fortifications.
The Citadel resides at the entrance of the eastern harbor on the east point of Pharos Island. It was erected on the site of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse continued to function until the time of the Arab conquest. Several disasters occurred, and the shape of the lighthouse was changed to some extent, but it continued to work. Restoration began during Ahmed Ibn Tulun (about 880 A.D). During the 11th century, an earthquake damaged the octagonal part. The bottom survived but could only serve as a watchtower, so a small Mosque was built on the top. In the 14th century, a destructive earthquake destroyed the building.

I saw all the highlights Alexandria had to offer. It was quite busy because Ramadan had just finished - also the library was closed. However, my guide was great and the catacombs were particularly fascinating.

We enjoyed our day which started with a car ride from Cairo to Alexandria. Our driver Tamer was a safe and courteous driver, and was happy to answer many questions we had about Egypt.
Our guide Shaima was very knowledgeable and kind, taking us through the various sites in Alexandria.
We were very pleased with our experience, and highly recommend this tour.

We had a great day trip to Alexandria from Cairo. Hesham booked the trip for us over phone and arranged everything for us on short notice. Ahmed was our guide, he was very knowledgeable and helped us understand the history and also answered all our questions. We covered all the major attractions including Catacombs, Citadel, Roman Theatre, Pompey's Pillar, and the library. We had kids and elderly parents in our group, and both the driver and the guide accommodated well for our requests to make quick stops along the long drive (~3hrs each way). It was our first day in Egypt after arriving from the US and the guide and driver personalized the itinerary to suit our needs as we were slow and jetlagged :) Ahmed also took few good pictures of us and stopped us a cute little tiny restaurant that had the best falafel pitas.
The driver picked us up promptly in the morning, the drive was very smooth, the van had good AC and was very comfortable for our group.
We highly recommend Hesham Tours. They made our first-ever day in Egypt memorable.
