We booked the 4-hour tour of Islamic and Coptic Cairo, with hotel pick-up & drop-off.
Our guide, Yasser, was knowledgeable and informative. He started with a useful overview of the history of ancient Egypt. He was happy to answer our questions & share his knowledge with us. We were guided around the Citadel and Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha (Alabaster Mosque), then on to Coptic Cairo for a tour of the Hanging church and the Church of Abu Serga.
The negatives: pick up at 10am. Our guide arrived on time but the driver was 25 minutes late while we waited on the side of the road.
We were taken to the ‘papyrus institute’ - we knew this was a shop but accepted it and managed to keep the visit to less than 10 minutes. Next, our guide wanted to go to a jewelry store, an alabaster store, and some other stores. We asked to go directly to Coptic Cairo.
The tour ended just before 1.30 pm - so a total of 3 hours (including 1.5-hour driving). On questioning, we were advised this was our fault for not going shopping. This was fairly disingenuous as we made it clear we were not there to shop.
Also of note, we were told the Ben Ezra Synagogue was closed - we can find no evidence to confirm this.
Finally, we paid an extra £30 for ‘tickets’ - the only ticket purchased was for the citadel costing 200 EGP (£7 each). All other places were free.
In summary, Yasser was a friendly individual and a good guide with plenty of knowledge and we felt safe on the tour. But it was shorter than advertised and overpriced. If you only have a few hours in Cairo this tour might be worth considering, BUT don’t pay for the ticket (service). Or you could save your pennies and take an Uber!
