If travellling with children, I would rate 5 stars. Fun experience for them. About 2 1/4 hours or 2.5 hours each way. The train station stops at El Tovar Hotel/Restaurant for about 3.5 hours. Plenty time to take in the sights, walk the rim, see the visitor centers, and have a lunch. Then back on the train.
If all adults,I would give three stars (drive yourself would be much faster.
I have done this twice and enjoyed both trips and scenery.
Note: bring snacks and drink on the train. You can buy it on the train if needed.

What an amazing experience! From the staff on the cars, to the entertainers, to the train robbery, we laughed up and back! The Grand bus tour and lunch at Maswik Lodge was fantastic!
We were in awe of the beautiful scenery and the journey was very pleasant and enjoyable.
Would definitely do this again!

We loved the scenery on the journey up to the canyon and seeing the cows on the plain, the deer and trees. The entertainment was great- the sheriff, the guitar playing singers and the train robbery on the return trip was amusing. The coach assistant was very knowledgeable and informative. She made sure that we drank plenty of water during the journey. The atmosphere was very relaxed and the older style carriage was comfortable.
We had plenty of time to walk along the rim and get a sandwich and coffee.
We wanted a drink at the hotel before we got the train back, but we were unable to get one. They were only interested in serving meals. Afternoon tea would have been lovely, the Americans don’t know what they’re missing.
