Hierve el Agua, Tule Tree, Mitla and Mezcal Distillery Tour

Excellent day tour. A perfect combination of travelling through the countryside, history, natural phenomenon of Tule tree, weaving presentation, light hike and dip into a mineral pools of Hierve de Agua, finishing with a visit to agave farm and mescal distillery. Andrea was on top of her game, always informative, engaging, fun and helpful. Great day. Would do it again.

This is a great trip, we started at the company’s headquarters where there is also a little cafe which makes great coffee, the food looked good too but we didn’t have the time to get breakfast. First we headed to the Tule Tree which is huge and set in lovely gardens. Next off to see the weaving at Teotitlan del Valle, one of the workers explained the process and our guide Kevin translated but missed an awful lot of the content (luckily we can understand Spanish so didn’t miss much) there was another guide there who did a much better job I believe her name was Andrea. I have to say their creations are stunning. Next up was the archaeological site of Mitla, the guide there was very knowledgeable and spoke very good English. We had a little time after the tour to walk the site on own before heading back to the pick up point. Our next stop was the awe inspiring Heirve El Agua petrified waterfall, it’s quite a hike down to the various viewpoints and back up, taking an hour or so depending on how far you went past the bottom, once back at the top there was only just enough time to have a quick dip before getting back on the minibus. Next we stopped for a buffet style lunch before heading to our final stop the Mezcal distillery where there was tasting of loads of Mezcals and Mezcal liqueurs. This bit was made all the more fun by the group of Americans who were on the trip with us, who we affectionately referred to as the Denver crew! After a lot of sampling it was time to head back to the start point in Oaxaca with the music being chosen by us travellers and a good time was had by all! The only improvement would be more time at Hierve El Agua as if you wanted to hike down to the viewpoints there was very little time left for a swim.

Las vistas de Hierve el Agua, si se desciende todo el camino, son muy bellas, pero es duro de recorrer para los no acostumbrados. Árbol de Tule impresionante, un ser vivo de más de dos mil años.
