During my recent visit to Victoria Falls, I had the absolute pleasure of sharing a home-cooked meal with a local family — an experience that turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of my trip. From start to finish, the evening was filled with warmth, culture, and genuine hospitality.
Before dinner, we enjoyed a casual drive-by tour of the local town, which gave me a glimpse into everyday life in the area — far beyond what typical tourist routes offer. It was humbling and eye-opening to see the markets, schools, and homes that make up the real heart of Victoria Falls.
Upon arriving at the family’s home, we were greeted with the kind of hospitality that instantly made us feel welcome. The conversation flowed easily as we shared stories and learned more about each other’s cultures. It didn’t feel like a “tour” — it felt like being invited over by old friends.
The meal itself was incredible made by their 9 year old daughter. Every dish was homemade, rich in flavor, and deeply rooted in Zimbabwean tradition. From sadza (a maize-based staple) to flavorful beef stews and chicken, everything was made with care and love. They even took time to explain each dish, sharing the ingredients and significance behind it.
This experience reminded me that travel isn’t just about seeing new places — it’s about connecting with people. If you’re visiting Victoria Falls and want to do something meaningful and authentic, I highly recommend taking part in a local family dinner like this. It’s an experience you’ll carry with you long after you’ve left the falls behind.
