This tour starts with a sightseeing tour of the island: 1st visit, downtown Coxen Hole, capital city of the Bay Islands and seat of government buildings and banks.
The sunken ship is a must-do photo stop; French Harbour is home of the fishing industry and the best seafood restaurants on the island. Two popular optional stops: the Iguana Farm, and the Sloth Hangout. Tell your guide if you want to visit.
Punta Gorda village is the heart of the Garifuna community and you'll learn their culture and traditions.
In Oakridge we'll board a traditional cayuco boat to reach Jonesville, a community known for its pirate festival, and more important to us, for the mangrove tunnels.
Hundreds of fish, bird and land species use the mangrove shelter as a nursing ground, and mangrove roots retain and prevent dirt and trash to reach the ocean, hence its importance.
Your private tour guide will be with you for the entire day and will bring you back with plenty time before your ship’s departure time

Juan Carlos was very knowledgeable about the island and was happy to alter the usual plan to suit our interests. He took us to a great restaurant for a local treat. Thanks so much for a terrific afternoon!

This is a fairly short tour in a small open boat with sun shade. Bring your sunscreen and hats. If you suffer seasickness then this may not be for you. The tour is located at the eastern end of the island and is quite a long drive from the west end, if this is all you plan to do, you might be disappointed but included as part of a day excursion to other sights it is well worth adding to you itinerary. The mangrove tunnels themselves are fairly short but do give a sense of what was here in times past. You will also pass some lovely homes and it is clear there is a lot of local wealth on the island too. Our guide explained that most of the homes we passed were owned by islanders and pointed out the ones that weren’t including the village of Czech ex-pats. Depending on the tour guide they may give you more or less information on the tunnels. However, our guide was very friendly and chatted about island life and culture. We were excited to add some bird sightings to our collection - we spotted frigate birds, herons, terns, lots of waders. It would have been great if we had guide that knew more about the wildlife, but that shouldn’t really be a negative for most folks.
