Ms Alexandra Malandain of Hong Kong a la carte, our competent private tour guide met us at The Novotel Century from where we walked to the MTR (subway) station. On our way to Tung Chung, she told us the history of Hong Kong, from the Opium Wars to the handover to China and the current geopolitical situation, a rather unique and fascinating story!
In Tung Chung, we boarded the Ngong Ping 360 cable cars to ascend to the Ngong Ping Plateau. From our crystal cabin, we were treated to breathtaking views of Tung Chung, the airport, the Hong Kong-Macau Bridge, and the picturesque hills of Lantau Island.
As we made our way to the Tian Tan Big Buddha, we wandered along Divine Generals Alley, where she shared insights about Po Lin Monastery, local feng shui, and the compelling story of the Buddha statue. We then climbed the 268 steps for a closer look at the majestic statue. Our exploration continued at the Devas and Ancestors’ Hall, followed by a visit to the Po Lin Buddhist Monastery and its two stunning halls.
Next, we took a local bus to Tai O fishing village, where we enjoyed a sampan ride around the village's canals and stilt houses. We then went off sea hoping to catch a glimpse of Hong Kong's famous pink dolphins, which sadly were elusive that day. We visited the Heritage Hotel, the former Marine Police Station, from where we walked back to the village.
After a well-deserved lunch at the Crossing Boat restaurant , we strolled around "Main Street” and finally took a local bus back to Tung Chung and then the underground back to your hotel.
Overall, this was a perfectly curated day that combined history, culture, nature, and local experiences. Alexandra was knowledgeable, engaging and enjoyable. We would highly recommend Alexandra Malandain of Hong Kong a la carte to anyone wanting to discover Hong Kong beyond the usual sights.

Seeing Lantau island and the big Buddha and monastery is much easier with a professional guide. There is so much to learn about this special place, the old fishing village, the history of the island. I especially enjoyed the different modes of transportation we experienced in our full day. The boat ride and cable car in particular were very enjoyable. It is such a contrast to the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong which I needed. The monastery temple is one of the most exquisite temples I have ever visited. I’m thrilled I had a chance to visit Lantau island.
