Depart for a day of Mayan historical adventure to see some of the finest Maya Ruins in Belize.
Xunantunich is located in the Cayo District across from Benque Viejo Road near the village of San Jose Succotz just a few miles from Belize’s western border with Guatemala. At the village of San Jose Succotz, we cross over the Mopan River using a hand-cranked ferry. From the other side of the river, it’s a mile uphill to the site, which can be accessed on foot or in a vehicle.
Xunantunich Mayan ruin, also known as the “Maiden of the Rock” is the second tallest Mayan ruin in Belize. The largest pyramid, El Castillo stands 130 feet high above the main plaza and offers an impressive panoramic view of the Cayo District, Guatemala, and the Mopan River. The site has been largely excavated and has a well-appointed educational museum.
Experience an authentic Belizean lunch in the immediate area of the ruins.

Had a fantastic time with Greg. The drive from Hopkins was about 2 hours and much more scenic than the one from BZE airport. Our guide for the ruins was Tony who was knowledgeable - learned a lot. My understanding is cruise ships dock on Mon and Wed so if you can avoid those days it will be much less busy. Had a good lunch at a local restaurant. Greg was our driver - friendly and efficient. The business is a well run family operation.

We were so excited for our trip to see the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich. I booked this trip a month ago for myself and my husband. I had already purchased our water taxi tickets totaling $130.54 for 2 round trip tickets from San Pedro to Belize City. Less than 24 hours before our tour was supposed to begin I received this message from the tour operator. (Pictured below) I understand people get sick, however given that this was booked a month in advance, paid in full, and other excursions were planned around this, something more needs to be done to rectify the situation. I also have some concerns given that 2 days before this tour was supposed to begin I received another message from the tour operator offering to give me a “cash price” which I respectfully declined given that it was already paid for on my credit card and to be perfectly honest seemed sketchy and not proper procedure when booked through TripAdvisor. (Also pictured below) Seems like a little more than a coincidence that after all of this correspondence my tour is cancelled at the last minute. I did receive a full refund as I should have, however the water taxi tickets are non refundable and I am writing this review to request a refund of an additional $130.54 for the 2 round trip water taxi tickets I paid for in advance of this canceled trip. We had other excursions planned and paid for during our stay in Belize so rebooking was not an option. Since the booking has been canceled by the operator I have no way of responding to the message about joining another tour. Given that I paid for a private tour that is what I expected. It’s unfortunate to have such a negative experience when the majority of the reviews seem positive, I am hoping this is a fluke for the operator and the situation can be rectified before seeking other means to fix this unfortunate situation I was put in. Looking forward to a resolution.

I highly recommend Get to Know Belize Adventures! We went on four tours with them and loved them all. Dirk was fabulous as a driver, tour guide, and person. He took us to Xunantunich where another very knowledgeable guide described the Mayan culture and climbed with us to the top of the tallest structure. The drive there and back was fun and informative, too, and gave us a chance to see more of Belize. as well as Guatemala in the distance. Don't miss this!
