We enjoyed walking through narrow lanes, discovering stunning old havelis (mansions) with intricate wooden carvings, some beautifully preserved, others showing the gentle wear of centuries. The guide expertly pointed out the influences – a blend of Mughal, Parsi, British, and Dutch architecture – explaining how Surat was truly a melting pot of global trade.

It was a pleasure taking this walking tour of a city famous for textiles and it's enterprising spirit. We also relished some local Indian food which was spicy for us, but delicious.
