Chinese Fishing Nets, Kochi (Cochin), Kerala, India Chinese fishing nets (Cheena vala) are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as "Chinese fishing nets" in India, the more formal name for such nets is "shore operated lift nets". Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20 m or more across. Each structure is at least 10 m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century. Indeed, one interpretation of the city name Kochi is ‘co-chin', meaning like China 15 minutes

We arrived at Fort Kochi from Willingdon Island by ferry. SALIM spoke to us. A mega friendly man. Consistently positive to rate was that we briefly agreed what we wanted to see and he then took the 1/2 day to show us the sights. We would never have found them all on our own, because Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are pretty winding. Actually everything seen but nevertheless we drive over again and use his services again if necessary, because he is just a very dear, even patient person. The Kathakali Theatre was a recommendation from Him and really remembered. Overall a very nice day with country and people and a very deep insight into the living conditions in South India. Salim as a driver you can really only recommend or wish for any India tourist.

A great way to see Fort Kochi, taking us to historical landmarks, scenic areas, and shopping spots. Our driver Salim was friendly and knowledgeable, explaining the history of the area and taking us to places we wouldn't have found on our own, including a kathakali theatre. He even took us to a great biryani place when I realised I was hungry part way through the tour! Highly recommended!
