It once overlooked the Yamuna River, which has now shrunk to some distance away.

The centrepiece is a 3m-high gold statue of Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan surrounded by more, fabulously intricate carvings.

The guide was a bit of the perfunctory side. He had all the lines memorised but when I asked him anything outside of the usual e.g. Whether Mahatma Gandhi's teaching were still as influential today he wasn't able to give an answer. As usual you end up in a shop where they are trying to sell you stuff. However they were not obnoxious about it.
