The king was in love and committed to honour the wife who gave him children until she died. Out of love, guilt or a sense of devotion he set out to have this magnificent structure built and also many more. His son had to stop him and put him in a house arrest so he would stop spending money in temples, mausoleums and other structures. The engraving of stone continues to this day through a descending line of the original builders and engravers as entrusted or commanded by the King.

Getting up at 1:30am was tough, because we just arrived at 11pm the day before, but we knew that in advance. The ride with the taxi was a small adventure on its own and where my gf could sleep, I didn't dare to close my eyes. The taxi had its AC on which helped at 37 degree at night...
We arrived at 4:30 in Agra and after 25 minutes waiting, we got picked up by our tour guide. He was very nice and knew a lot about the place. Also, he seemed to know all other guides, such that he was able to get us through the few people that were already at the site. The Taj Mahal is incredible, if you have only seen pictures so far, you will be blown away the first time you stand in front of it. Our guide did this very well, he explained some of the history and ended with: and now I have a little surprise for you: and there it was. Also very nice is the fact, that his father was a professional photographer and without any asking he took our camera and phone and took jaw dropping pictures of us. Here, again, it was very advantageous that he knew most other Tourguides, as he even managed to take a picture of only us and the Taj. After approx 2 hours we went on.
We went to the Red Fort which is incredible as well, but - at least for us - not as incredible as the Taj Mahal. Here, our guide also had a lot of historical facts and loved to talk about them. His passion for these sites speaks for his profession as a tour guide.
After the Red Fort at approx. 8am we had a little breakfast at a hotel in Agra. It was nice but nothing special.
Before we were taken home by the taxi, we visited a small manufacture which is creating art as displayed in the Taj Mahal. Though this is presented very interesting and one can even try out the hard work by using the chisel oneself, after the presentation, a plethora of marble tables is presented and tried to sell to you. Since we are travelling for over 2 weeks more, plus have no use for such marble table stones, we kindly declined.
The ride home was fast, but again with an "all Indian" driving style, so pretty breath taking. We arrived at our hotel after approx. 12 hours.
The picture attached was taken by myself with the tour guides advise.
