    Built by Emperor Akbar in the 1570s, the UNESCO-listed Fatehpur Sikri—which means “City of Victory”—was the capital of the Mughal Empire for about 10 years. Today, a well-preserved collection of monuments, palaces, temples, and mosques remains, in a uniform red sandstone architectural style. Surrounded by walls, the ancient city sits atop a rocky ridge. Although Akbar was a Muslim ruler, Fatehpur Sikri’s architectural style reflects both Islamic and Hindu elements. Despite its grandeur, the city was abandoned by the early 17th century. People still live outside the old walls.

Le site de Fathepur Sikri est absolument magnifique et à visiter si vous aimez l’architecture et l’histoire des Moghols. Pour le reste, il est préférable de s’organiser cette excursion sur place avec l’hôtel ou en autonomie. Cette prestation, très chère pour les tarifs indiens, s’est assez mal déroulée pour nous. Tout d’abord, le chauffeur (certes sympathique et au volant d’une voiture agréable et confortable) s’est présentée au mauvais hôtel. Arrivés à Fathepur Sikri, nous nous sommes fait cueillir par un guide qui, a défaut d’une présentation intéressante des monuments, s’est surtout efforcé de nous faire dépenser de l’argent dans des pseudo “bonnes œuvres” et de l’artisanat local dont l’authenticité est loin d’être démontré. Tout à ses objectifs mercantiles, ce guide a meme oublié de nous faire visiter une partie du site historique. Une vraie déception sur tous les plans.
