Educational and Venture off the tourist trail on this unique 3-hour walking tour of the Sanjay Colony and get a first-hand glimpse of life in a Delhi slum. Learn about the struggles of some of Delhi’s poorest inhabitants, and discover the rich culture and sense of community that has emerged among residents.     Meet your guide at Connaught Place in the morning or afternoon, depending on which option you selected upon booking, and set out by metro for Sanjay Colony, a small slum built on 25 acres (8 hectares) of land. After a 40-minute metro ride, walk with your guide and small group to the nearby slum and commence your 2 hour walking tour.   Follow a maze of narrow streets as you’re introduced to enterprising residents and their small-scale industries. Stop by a clothes recycling-and-manufacturing business to observe how materials are painstakingly separated, and learn about the clothing factories where many families work to make the finished items. Leave your cameras at home — photos are prohibited on this tour — and give your full attention to the people and buildings that surround you.  Visit a small Hindu temple and hear about the importance of religion in the residents’ lives. Gain a further understanding of daily life in the slum on a visit to a local home, where you can engage in an informative conversation with a family.  Enjoy a stunning rooftop view of Sanjay Colony before ending your tour at a small school, where you can see evidence of the positive contribution that proceeds from the tour make in the community.  Please note: We are sensitive to the issues and concerns surrounding slums and we understand that this tour may not be suitable for everyone. We strongly believe that the purpose of this tour is for educational reasons alone and allows for a better understanding of Indian life inside Sanjay Colony. Furthermore, the majority of the proceeds from your local tour operator go back into the local community to support a variety of projects on education, health and livelihood.

This is my third time tour with Ravi with started since 2018 when I met Ravi in an award function where he was winner of outlook best responsible tour operator of India. This time his company Understanding India Tours took all the stress and anxiety of travelling to India. And probably for half the price of using an English company. A car and Sandeep our first class safe driver transported us from one astonishing fort/palace/lake city/temple etc to another. We stayed at an array of beautiful tranquil heritage hotels. Ravi were able to tailor the holiday to suit our individual tastes. We saw so much. Every day brought a new experience. Everything was seamless. The knowledgeable local guides at different cities were essential as we would have missed so much by our own. The people are astonishingly warm and friendly. The experience was transformative. Do not miss it!

We visited India with my aunt, aged 72, in 2019 and were highly impressed by the efficiency and expertise of the Ravi and his team. So this time, after worse time of pandemic, we decided to take our grand-daughter, aged 17, would enjoy the unique experience of discovering similar wonders in Rajasthan. This time we included nature excursions to view wildlife such as the river cruise at Chambal Safari Lodge, as well as tiger safaris in national park. We also revisited our favourite places, including Deogarh and Fort Singh Sagar, Jaipur and Amber Fort and of course the Taj Mahal. In all places, Ravi's company Understanding India Tours had suggested interesting and unusual activities and Ravi suggestions was perfect at all times. Our tour escort Mr Krishna, all local guides and drivers were always helpful and conveyed us safely everywhere. Last time we were traveling with Ravi but this time he was out of country, hopefully during our next upcoming trip to south India he'll be our guide again. Highly recommended tour operator in India. P.S. 50% profits from our trip amount is also shared to an ngo in Sanjay colony in Delhi.

After being recommended the tour by friends, my daughter and I were keen to do something similar ourselves and we did golden triangle along with tiger safaris at Ranthambore national park. Great initial communication outlining our plans before heading to Delhi. Warmly greeted by our driver & tour escort Abhishek who was with us for all 7 days, meeting at the airport was absolutely brilliant - a lovely man, as well our driver was great and both made us feel very safe. Our all local guides were always punctual and willing to have a chat throughout the different journey. All guides spoke very good English, would happily answer any questions we had and took photos whenever we asked. We requested 3 star accommodation and were impressed with all that we stayed in, great selection of hotel by owner Ravi. Highly recommend this company as a great way to see a great country - thank you to Ravi who organised everything for us.
