Amazon Wonder Expeditions were absolutely fantastic and the highlight of our holiday in Peru. Prior to entering the amazon, our tour guide Luis picked us up from our hotel to the port, where we stopped by a local market selling weird and wonderful jungle food. From there, we hopped onto the boat for a few hours journey down the amazon river. The boat itself is open with a roof on the top - it’s spacious and breezy - perfect for a refreshing and relaxing cool down from the humidity and the sun. On arrival at the lodge, we were pleasantly surprised - a lovely community of cabins with a sociable dining area. The cabins are comfortable and spacious and each has a clean bathroom with a toilet, shower and running water for 24 hours a day. Electricity comes on between 6pm and 9pm - perfect to light up the community for dinner and the cabins after sunset. Our first night entailed a trek - this was a fantastic experiences. Ensure to take torches as there is no light pollution and the surroundings are pitch black. We came across tarantulas, poisonous spiders and frogs as well fireflies - a must do experience! Dinner was absolutely delicious - all meals were home cooked Peruvian food made by the ladies in the nearest village. This was best food we had during our entire trip and it was encouraging to give back to the local community. Our highlights of the tour were visiting the monkey sanctuary and playing with baby orphan monkeys, the incredible butterfly farm run by the local community, and visiting a second sanctuary where sloths, snakes and other animals were rescued. The trip itself was extremely well organised - even on rainy days both tour operators, Luis and Allen, would rearrange the trips to ensure we didn’t miss out. Both were extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the amazon and it’s nature, and this shone through immensely, engaging and stimulating us throughout. Groups were no large than 6 people so felt very personalised - they ate with us and became more like friends than tour guides, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Our safety was paramount to them - one of the other girls tour was unwell (she was unwell prior to entering the amazon) and both Allen and Luiz prioritised taking them back to the hospital in Iquitos city. It was encouraging to know that health and safety of the guests were prioritised above all. Allen and Luis run a fantastic trip - their passion and warmth shine through. We would 1000% recommend them to all.
