Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area (e.g. at Boscoreale, Stabiae), was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.

The house owes its name to a picture of Menander, an Athenian poet, placed in the portico. The house belonged to Quintus Poppaeus Sabinus of the Poppei family, relatives of the Empress Poppea Sabina, Nero's second wife.

The overall experience was positive, there wasn't a huge amount of information shared while travelling between locations. We would have appreciated more historical facts about the city, and about the history of the destinations. It was good but very high level. Roberta did a great job explaining the times and keeping the group together. In Pompeii itself we didn't get to see all of the things suggested on the itinerary, we appreciate that the time available is very small and the museum is very big, so it could be a challenge but we missed the theatre e.g. It was a tight time to go to the top of Vesuvius we only just made it back to the bus in time and had to really work hard to get up the mountain so we could spend time at the top.

We joined this trip last minute as the one we booked had been cancelled, and we are so pleased we did . Isabella was a fantastic guide. Well organised and prompt. Our guide in pompeii Luigi was also brilliant. Clearly loved the site and his information was interesting and just enough so as not to overload you.

Time actually spent inside Pompeii is not very long, maybe 90 minutes and an hour to eat - I would’ve much rather spent more time seeing more of the city. This tour only allowed for a very small portion.
