Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area (e.g. at Boscoreale, Stabiae), was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.

The house owes its name to a picture of Menander, an Athenian poet, placed in the portico. The house belonged to Quintus Poppaeus Sabinus of the Poppei family, relatives of the Empress Poppea Sabina, Nero's second wife.

Roberta was a great guide. She managed two large groups and kept track of everyone! She was wonderful. We didnt get to go to vesuvius because of high winds but she really tried. And Lalo the bus driver was great too.
