Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Naples, Italy The National Archaeological Museum of Naples is made up of three main sections:
- The Farnese Collection: conceived during the Renaissance period at the will of Alessandro Farnese, future Pope Paul III, the Farnese Collection contains masterpieces of ancient Rome.
We can admire precious ornaments, such as the Venus Callipyge and three statues of the Baths of Caracalla, in Rome: the Farnese Hercules, the Farnese Atlas and the Farnese Bull, the largest single sculpture yet recovered from antiquity in the world.
- The Pompeian Collection: the museum preserves the largest number of works from the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Amongst it all, the famous mosaic of the battle of Isso shines, found in the Hous of the Faun. The rooms boast incredible bronze sculptures from the House of the Papyri, precious objects, mosaics and frescoes that remained immune to the time and the lava of Vesuvius. In the Secret Cabinet, at red-light room, exhibits of an erotic nature are on display.
- The Egyptian Collection: the oldest in Italy and the third most important in the world after those in Cairo and Turin. It consists of 2,500 pieces including statues, amulets, mummies and human remains.
- Minor Collections: the museum is enriched by over 150,000 numismatic specimens: from coins minted in Magna Graecia to the medals from the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and with more than 2,000 pieces including texts written in Greek, Latin and Italic dialects.

Strange museum to say the least, was interesting all the same. Was highlighted that the remains of Pompeii were stored here, those that were weren’t of great significance. There was a lot of modern art (containing the likes of Mickey Mouse) which I didn’t find particularly interesting. If into museums would probably be worth a stop but wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to include it in your trip to Naples
