Please advise that Sterkfontein Caves is closed due to heavy rain that was raining so management is waiting for inspectors to come and inspect it before they will allow tourists to go inside (FLOODED) We can inly offer tour to the museum now. The Cradle of Humankind was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999 because of the area’s exceptional contribution to our understanding of the history of humanity, over 3-million years. All together, there are 15 major fossil sites in the Cradle of Humankind, of which Sterkfontein Caves is the most famous. The fossils “Mrs Ples” and “Little Foot” were both discovered at the Sterkfontein Caves, as well as thousands more fossils of hominids, which are human ancestors, as well those of plants and animals. More hominid fossils have been found in the Cradle of Humankind than anywhere else on Earth. During this tour you will have access to the exhibits and get the full pictures of remarkable fossil findings.

Meant to be an attraction for visitors, both local and international. Well, we’ve not been there for many years but took our overseas visitors with their young son to Maropeng over the Easter weekend. What a disappointment! What we fail to understand is that one must do regular maintenance to ensure things work. NONE of the activity tables at the bottom level worked! The ceiling was leaking water. What a disappointment ????. As South Africans we left Maropeng embarrassed!

Great trip out to Maropeng to see the Cradle of Humankind - this is a fascinating archaeological site. Our tour guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable, sharing interesting facts about South Africa and the site as we travelled! Unfortunately the caves were closed due to weather, but the museum experience is still well worth it.

The tour guide was very friendly and made the experience better however, I would not recommend going out of your way to visit the site in general especially if you are limited on time. The cradle do humankind is a marketing gimmick and the museum did not offer much. The museum was lacking compared to our expectations and the journey out there take s a couple hours.
